Kiana_Tom : Aloha!
Flex appealers!
"Dish Diva" : Kiana,
thanks for being our guest tonight!
"Dish Diva" : Let's
get started! We have lots of questions!!
"Dish Diva" : Our
first question tonight comes from Liza who says: How did you get your
own show! I never miss a day!
Kiana_Tom : Liza,
thank you for watching! I appreciate you tuning in every day. I used
to be an assistant on a show called "Body Shaping" and I
knew I always wanted to produce my own show to address the topics I
wanted to. So on a remote location I met the head of programming of
ESPN and told him about "Flex Appeal" that focused on
lifestyles and sports
Kiana_Tom : and
they loved the idea and it became the #1 show after 5 weeks. I've been
asked to do a new show for FOX.
"Dish Diva" : Manolis_Varnasactor
Asks: Kiana how do you keep in such a perfect shape and how many hours
a day do you exercise
Kiana_Tom : Manolis,
I work out religiously 1 to 2 hours per day. I train first thing in
the morning so it's behind me and I have more energy. Since I've been
training for so long I've found that consistent training is the key.
You need to work out every day just like you brush your teeth every
day.
"Dish Diva" : nan10
says: Will weights make me bulk up? I worry about that. I don't want
to look like my boyfriend.
Kiana_Tom : Nan,
good question. You don't need to be scared that you will become bulky,
it's not that easy to add muscle mass. Woman aren't genetically
dispositioned build muscles like men do. You get better results by
lifting heavier weights. I trade off my work out with heavier with
less reps and lighter with more reps.
"Dish Diva" : We
are LIVE from with fitness expert, Kiana Tom. To ask Kiana Tom a
question, whisper your question to Ask_Kiana.
"Dish Diva" : So
heavier weights do not mean bulkier muscles for women?
Kiana_Tom : Correct,
yes, it's hard to put on extra muscle.
"Dish Diva" : shala
says: What do you think of Body-Bump?
Kiana_Tom : Shala,
I like the class. We do a similar exercise work out on "Flex
Appeal" it's basically super setting and tri-setting where you're
doing one exercise immediately after another for a full work out. It's
a good way to strengthen your muscles, lose excess fat and sweat at
the same time.
"Dish Diva" : "joanne
chan" Asks: I'd like to ask a question. I am tall and slender and
I find it hard to put on weight. What is a good way to build up my
upper body strength?
Kiana_Tom : Joanne,
3 things. #1 strength train using proper form you should lift within
65% of your one rep mass. #2 feed your body high protein, complex
carbs to add lean muscle mass, and #3 continue to do cardiovascular to
add more muscle.
"Dish Diva" : corky
says: Do you follow the Zone or any other diet program?
Kiana_Tom : Corky,
I'm always Zoning. My daily nutrition intake is 40/30/30 and I'm a
spokesperson for Balance Bars that are 40/30/30 40 Carbs/30 protein/30
fat. I'm a believer that everything should be in moderation. I think
anything in excess with high protein or carbs throws your system off
balance.
"Dish Diva" : Do
you stay away from bread or other starchy carbs?
Kiana_Tom : I'm
very selective, if I have a plate of food, you can see the ratio. I'll
have fresh fish, fresh vegetables. It's all very balanced.
"Dish Diva" : makeawish
says: Hi Kiana! I have always wanted to meet you! Do you mind guys
that like to watch you work out? :)
Kiana_Tom : Hey
I love it, whatever reason you're watching at least you're watching.
<laugh>
Kiana_Tom : I
can see you <laugh>
Kiana_Tom : I
think a lot of the viewers, I hear that a lot, they're maybe not
working out but maybe getting ready to start or take some tips to the
gym. It is TV and we try and package it as entertaining. And Flex
Appeal is Sex Appeal.
"Dish Diva" : boomer
says: What was it like to do your series at Walt Disney World?
Kiana_Tom : Boomer,
it was so much fun. We were treated so well. We toured Epcot and ate
in Italy one night and China the next. I got to go backstage at Circ
Du Soleil one night and saw the German Twins on the German Wheel. They
have great abs!
Kiana_Tom : The
funny thing was the hotel we were staying at was called the
Polynesian. <laugh> That was so funny for me to say Aloha to me
while we were in Florida.
"Dish Diva" : kandi
Asks: I heard it's bad to do the same work out everyday, because your
body will get used to it and nothing will happen! is that true?
Kiana_Tom : Kandi,
you're right. Your muscles get used to it and your workout routine
won't show results. The best exercises are the ones you change every
time you go to the gym. I change my routine from free weights,
machines, etc. You'll get the best results to change your workout
every time. A trick would be would be to follow someone and take turns
doing
Kiana_Tom : routines
and each time you have to make up one and then trade, so you can
challenge each other.
"Dish Diva" : babyface
says: I was wondering what your thoughts were on spinning. I take it
three times a week and can barely walk.
Kiana_Tom : Babyface,
obviously your body is telling you that you're doing a little to much.
Exercising should give you more energy, if you're hurting you should
cut back. Sometimes people get excited about a new class and over
train. My advise would be to cut back to 2 classes a week and supplement
with other training. Sometimes in spinning classes there is a
Kiana_Tom : lot
of competition. You should be doing this for yourself, not to impress
anybody.
"Dish Diva" : kevinB
says: Hi Kiana. I swim a lot in the summer. Is this a good way to lose
weight?
Kiana_Tom : Kevin,
yes, it is if you swim fast enough to get your heart rate to the
target heart zone. Swimming is a great way to develop elongated
muscles. It's also great for rehabilitation or anyone coming back from
an injury.
"Dish Diva" : KianaFan
says: Aloha! What are good exercises I can do traveling?
Kiana_Tom : You
need a Kiana Fitness Band. You can get it on my website http://www.Kiana.com.
If you're traveling you can call ahead and find out what they do have.
With the fitness band you can do everything from lunges, tricep
kickbacks, curls, you can even take it to work.
Kiana_Tom : We
also just produced a video that goes along with it.
"Dish Diva" : "KC
MACK9" Asks: DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING MOVIE ROLES?
Kiana_Tom : KC,
after co-staring in "Universal Soldier: The Return" I have
received a lot of scripts that I have been having fun reading. I would
love to do another action film because now I'm addicted to shooting
guns and working with muscular men. <laugh>
"Dish Diva" : Were
you afraid of working with a gun at all?
Kiana_Tom : That
was the first time I had shot a gun. I expected there to be kick but
there wasn't, it was just a lot louder than I expected.
"Dish Diva" : beautyandthebeach
says: I need some help with snack foods. Any healthy ideas?
Kiana_Tom : I'm
a snacker too. I always keep a Ziploc bag with almonds, Balance bars,
vitamins, bottled water, fat free Fig Newton's, dried fruit, and if
it's not longer than a day trip I'll keep hard boiled eggs.
<laugh> or it gets kind of smelly.
Kiana_Tom : When
I fly I take a cooler with me and take chicken breast with me.
"Dish Diva" : Shamu
Asks: how old were you when you started working out regularly?
Kiana_Tom : I've
been playing tennis and snow skiing at 5 and started lifting at 15 to
improve my tennis game. Many moons now <laugh>
"Dish Diva" : Jock19
says: What is a typical day of shooting like? How many episodes do you
film in one day? Is it hard on your body to film more than one
episode? Cuz baby you look great.
Kiana_Tom : Jock,
that's a good question. Most people think I shoot the show every day
but we tape on location twice per year. I arrive for hair and makeup
at 6am the camera rolls at 8am and we'll tape until lunch and finish
up when the sun goes down about 6. We'll finish in 1 day at the most 2
shows. It is very hard on your body and over training but we have
Kiana_Tom : to
have that schedule for cost. When you see different segments like like
and then heavy training we may have shot the heavy training in the
morning and the light by the end of the day. I've been doing it so
long I'm used to it, but the guys on the show don't believe me when I
tell them to select lighter weights.
"Dish Diva" : Miss
Thing: I can never fall asleep. Any suggestions?
Kiana_Tom : If
you're having trouble sleeping you might be exercising to late and
getting to much stimulation. If that's the case try exercising in the morning
and avoid caffeine like chocolate and sodas. Also try to go to bed at
the same time every night.
Kiana_Tom : I
know for me if I train past 8 I'm up till 1 or 2 in the morning. I get
so hyped up.
"Dish Diva" : If
you don't work out, do you have a hard time to getting to sleep as
well?
Kiana_Tom : No,
because I go to bed at the same time and am in a routine. But
sometimes I take melatonin.
Kiana_Tom : My
mom used to tell me "If you want to get anything done, give it to
a busy person."
"Dish Diva" : feyd
says: Do you ever get the munchies and just completely blow your diet?
I do this regularly, and I feel so guilty.
Kiana_Tom : Feyd,
we all do it. The key is not to do it to regularly. Don't be hard on
yourself. I do one meal per week, I allow myself to have whatever I
want to satisfy my cravings but I'm not consistently eating junk food.
"Dish Diva" : flexgurl
says: Are you from Hawaii?
Kiana_Tom : Flexgurl,
born and raised in Maui.
"Dish Diva" : Do
you still live there?
Kiana_Tom : I
spend a lot of time there. 3 or 4 months out of the year. I divide my
time up between NY and LA.
"Dish Diva" : I
have to ask-- have you ever swum with the dolphins?
Kiana_Tom : Oh
yes!
Kiana_Tom : It
is so amazing! I didn't think they would feel like they do. They feel
like a tight balloon.
Kiana_Tom : It's
a weird feeling because we're all conditioned with sharks and
everything.
"Dish Diva" : Pauline2
says: Have men ever been afraid to approach you because you are so fit
and perfect?
Kiana_Tom : Pauline,
what a nice compliment. I think a lot of men are intimidated to
approach me but when they do I always hear how down to earth I am.
"Dish Diva" : Blick182
says: If you weren't doing this. What would you be doing?
Kiana_Tom : Believe
it or not I want to UCLA and took the LSAT's and applied for law
school. That was one option
Kiana_Tom : The
other thing I could see me doing was being an anchor woman.
"Dish Diva" : gates
says: Hi Kiana! Any advice for an overweight teen? My daughter has no
self esteem?
Kiana_Tom : Gates,
get her into a organized sports like soccer or join a health club with
her, hire a trainer and do it with her. Fitness does wonders for self
esteem. The more she works out, she'll feel more confident and get
positive reinforcement. Through studies with Dr. Kramer from Ball
State University they say kids can lift weights as long as they focus
Kiana_Tom : on
the form and not the amount of weights.
"Dish Diva" : This
event is being brought o you by DietRiot.com. Visit their site at http://www.dietriot.com
"Dish Diva" : bette
says: Hi Kiana! I know this may be a crazy question but I have to ask/
I work out a lot outside and I wear makeup which melts. Can you recommend
a brand that does not melt?
Kiana_Tom : Bette,
there are 2 that I like and I've tried all of them. The best one is
Joe Blasco and it's called StudioFix. That's what I wear on TV because
it has sunscreen and good coverage. I can wear it all day and it's
still perfect. Then there is one by Mac and it's a liquid tint that is
a lot lighter weight. It's not as durable, but it's a cleaner look
"Dish Diva" : Our
last question comes from Jake who says: If a friend were to ask what
you would like to be remembered by, what would you say? I watch you
every day by the way at work.
Kiana_Tom : Jake,
I would like to be remembered the same way I remember my grandmother,
respected, admired, and someone who helps people get in shape. A nice
person, really cute <laugh> a good sense of humor, muscular
<laugh> I'd like to be remembered in a positive way. I believe
in Karma, if you put out good energy it's going to come back to you.
"Dish Diva" : Now
are you writing a personal ad here? (laughs)
Kiana_Tom : <laugh>
"Dish Diva" : Kiana,
thanks!

you again!
