Digital Dish Diva says:
Welcome to MSN Live! Tonight we are pleased to welcome pro
skateboarder, Tony Hawk to MSN Live.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Tony, welcome to MSN Live! It's great to see you here!
Tony Hawk says:
Hello! Thanks for inviting me. Thanks for showing up!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Tony, let's talk about skateboarding!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Let's start with the audience questions!
Digital Dish Diva says:
TheWoohaa Asks: What kind of board did you start out with? Was it a
cheap one?
Tony Hawk says:
Yeah, definitely it was my brother's hand-me-down. It was a Bahne
fiberglass board about 5 inches wide.
Digital Dish Diva says:
setzer6 says: Why did you try the 900 on the night you did? Was it
a feeling?
Tony Hawk says:
Well, I tried it because it was the best trick event and I did the
best trick I knew at the time--a Varial 720 and I had time left so I
thought I'd try something I hadn't tried before.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Simpago says: How long did it take for him to learn the 900?
Tony Hawk says:
Well from the time I actually started trying it, I thought about it
about 14 years ago, but from the time I started trying it, it took
about 4 years.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Guest_vtskater Asks: How many tricks have you invented?
Tony Hawk says:
I'm not exactly sure, but I think somewhere around 80.
Digital Dish Diva says:
yz_punk Asks: How old were you when you started skating?
Tony Hawk says:
I was 10.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Realogik Asks: Tony, have you worked on TonyHawk Pro Skater 2?
Tony Hawk says:
Yes. The whole time. It will be out in September.
Digital Dish Diva says:
butterflygurl8 Asks: Did you ever get frustrated with skating and
want to quit?
Tony Hawk says:
Not really. I would get frustrated, but not enough to quit. I would
get frustrated and think I couldn't do it, but then I would take a
different approach and try and find a way to make it work.
Digital Dish Diva says:
metallica780 Asks: Hey Tony, I was wanting to know what was it like
to be in the spotlight at the x games doing the 900?
Tony Hawk says:
It was crazy! It was probably one of the best times in my career,
but it was very unnerving that so many people were watching me screw
up repeatedly.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Veggeto12 Asks: What’s your favorite board?
Tony Hawk says:
My current model, which is called the Birdman.
Digital Dish Diva says:
±Jaster_Mareel± Asks: Hey Tony, what was your score when you did
the 900?
Tony Hawk says:
My score? I don't know. I won the best trick event. We weren't
really being scored. I believe Colin McKay placed second.
Digital Dish Diva says:
hawkins91 Asks: Can you give any advice to new skaters?
Tony Hawk says:
I think try and learn the basics before trying anything out of your
limits. And just keep trying because you'll eventually get it.
Digital Dish Diva says:
dragon_867 says: How do you get big air on a small ramp?
Tony Hawk says:
Learn to Olly (laugh). The higher you olly on a little ramp, the
higher you go.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Neesy00 Asks: I heard you were retiring after last year's X games.
If that is true, do you plan on continuing to appear in events across
America?
Tony Hawk says:
I haven't competed since last year and I'm doing more exhibitions
and tours now because I don't have to follow the competition schedule,
so I'm still skating as much as ever.
Digital Dish Diva says:
†Resident_Evil† Asks: What was your worst injury?
Tony Hawk says:
I broke my elbow about two and a half years ago and it took
probably about two months to recover from it and get my confidence
back.
Digital Dish Diva says:
eddiestud Asks: How many stairs can you bump?
Tony Hawk says:
I don't know. I haven't jumped down stairs in a long time. I would
guess 13 or so. It's been a while.
Digital Dish Diva says:
hawkins91 Asks: What is your high score on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater?
Tony Hawk says:
I haven't played the first one in a while, but the first one
somewhere around 300,000.
Digital Dish Diva says:
taylor735 Asks: Have you ever tried to BMX?
Tony Hawk says:
Only when I was younger, actually before I started skating. I just
did it because my friends were doing it, but I never took it to
seriously.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Blackchocolate3 Asks: Where are you from?
Tony Hawk says:
I'm from San Diego and I still live there.
Digital Dish Diva says:
§nôbôa®dchi© Asks: What was your favorite event that you ever
skated in?
Tony Hawk says:
I think either last year's X-Games or the World Championship in
Germany, the Muenster, and I really enjoyed that event.
Digital Dish Diva says:
BOYER2K Asks: In your video game is there a way to get over the
fence in ross well?
Tony Hawk says:
(laugh) Yeah, I believe there is and I think it's right near the
beginning, but it's very difficult and nothing out there worth
checking out.
Digital Dish Diva says:
scootchy Asks: What was your first trick?
Tony Hawk says:
The first trick was going up a curb.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Glamboy74 Asks: Tony, what ever happened to the Animal Chin ramp,
was it destroyed or is it still standing?
Tony Hawk says:
It was destroyed.
Digital Dish Diva says:
JX8 Asks: What is a half pipe?
Tony Hawk says:
It's a ramp designed for skating and it's called a half pipe
because it's a pipe cut in half.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Who built your first ramp?
Tony Hawk says:
My dad built a ramp for me in our driveway, a real small one when I
was 11 years old.
Digital Dish Diva says:
sean186 Asks: Are you good friends with Tom Green?
Tony Hawk says:
Pretty good friends, we talk once in a while, but I don't see him
very much because we're both very busy. I do know that he just got
engaged to Drew Barrymore.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Phish Asks: Do you design some of the boards for Birdhouse
skateboards?
Tony Hawk says:
Yeah, the shape, but we actually have an artist that does the
graphics.
Digital Dish Diva says:
redjester Asks: Are vert ramps really intimidating if you're not
used to them?
Tony Hawk says:
I think they are at first, but the more you do it, the less
intimidating they become. Once you learn how to fall, it's not to hard
to get used to.
Digital Dish Diva says:
the_real_y2android Asks: What other video games you like to play
besides your own when you're not busy?
Tony Hawk says:
I like kind of off beat games like Parappa the Rappa, and Abe's Odd
World.
Digital Dish Diva says:
CEO_Of_AWF_Noldster Asks: On Tony’s Pro Skater For the N64, is
there a cheat that only you know about?
Tony Hawk says:
Not for the 64, no. The cheats are the same for the different
platforms.
Digital Dish Diva says:
InsideOut0 Asks: Do you have any other sports that you like to
participate in?
Tony Hawk says:
I surf and snowboard when I can and basketball once in a while.
Digital Dish Diva says:
BIGGANBADD Asks: Do you ever play with tech decks?
Tony Hawk says:
I do a little, but my son is heavily into it.
Digital Dish Diva says:
economicsman Asks: Where can my son get your signature decks?
Tony Hawk says:
At any good skate shop. They probably carry our brand.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Dave says: How long did it take to turn pro?
Tony Hawk says:
That varies, there's no formula to say, but if you are an amateur
and you gain recognition through competitions, then a company will
eventually want to sponsor you and turn you pro.
Digital Dish Diva says:
appleofyouri Asks: Do you have your own line of clothes?
Tony Hawk says:
Only of kids clothing, which is like ages 4-14 basically. It's
called Hawk Kids.
Digital Dish Diva says:
crusader_75_ Asks: How many hours a day do you skate?
Tony Hawk says:
Anywhere from like 2 to 4 probably, but not every single day.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Katrina285 Asks: Tony what’s your favorite kinda music to listen
to when you skate?
Tony Hawk says:
Anything with a lot of energy or to get you in the grove like Nine
Inch Nails, Prodigy, Moby, those all work.
Digital Dish Diva says:
eddiestud Asks: Why do you think there are so many signs saying you
skateboard here or there?
Tony Hawk says:
I think the biggest reason is because they are afraid of liability
issues. Like if they get hurt and they're a minor, their parents will
sue. Unfortunately that's true, I've been sued when a person skated my
ramp, even they didn't have permission, and they got hurt. They lost
in the end because it was obviously their fault, but it just shows you
there's that potential.
Digital Dish Diva says:
AznSk8tr4Life Asks: IN Tony Hawk 2, you have a special move called
the "Sacktap" is that real?
Tony Hawk says:
Yeah, it's real. All the moves I do in either game, are moves I
really do.
Digital Dish Diva says:
§nôbôa®dchi© Asks: Tony, I have always wondered, how has your
life changed since you went pro?
Tony Hawk says:
Well I went pro at such an early age it wasn't such a big shift
because skating wasn't really big. It has changed through the years
because it's become my livelihood. So turning pro wasn't that big of a
change, but now it's changed a lot and become my career.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Quidam14 Asks: Does you son influence you to keep skateboarding,
and to you teach him everything you know?
Tony Hawk says:
Not necessarily. It's fun to see him learning all these things and
taking an interest in it. It's not because he's into it that I've kept
skating, I've enjoyed it just as much as anyone. As far as the family
is concerned, it's great that he's into it because I can identify with
it so easily.
Digital Dish Diva says:
the_real_y2android Asks: Have you considered a career in acting?
Stunt devil?
Tony Hawk says:
Not necessarily acting, but definitely as stunt double. I've done
stunt doubles in the past. I would love to do stuff, not too
dangerous, but the falling and flipping stuff, that would be fun.
Digital Dish Diva says:
AllFakieSkating Asks: What was your greatest influence towards
becoming a pro skater?
Tony Hawk says:
Probably Steve Calbolero. He was already a professional when I was
just becoming a sponsored amateur. He was always an innovator and an
inspiration because of his age and style.
Digital Dish Diva says:
ghettoprice Asks: Tony, are there any plans for a follow up video
to 'The End' besides the 'baker bootleg'?
Tony Hawk says:
Yeah, we would like to do a video. We're hoping to get one out next
year sometime.
Digital Dish Diva says:
economicsman Asks: Where can my son contact you?
Tony Hawk says:
You can contact me through http://www.clubTonyHawk.com
and there's a link to send me messages. I can't answer them all, but I
try.
Digital Dish Diva says:
†Resident_Evil† Asks: Do you think it’s important to wear
safety gear when u skate because ive seen u skate plenty of times on
TV without your gear.
Tony Hawk says:
I think it's definitely important when you're first starting out
and you don't realize the dangers of limitations. I don't let my 7 yr.
old son skate without a helmet.
Digital Dish Diva says:
the_real_y2android Asks: When will I see you on a box of Wheaties?
Tony Hawk says:
I have no clue. (laughs)
Tony Hawk says:
I guess once they recognize skateboarding as an athlete officially.
Digital Dish Diva says:
AllFakieSkating Asks: Do you like to work with beginning skaters?
You know, kinda show them the ropes of skateboarding?
Tony Hawk says:
Yeah, it's fun. I don't necessarily do private teaching, but if I'm
around I definitely try to help.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Tony, thanks for joining us tonight on MSN Live. We’ll be looking
forward to your next videogame.
Tony Hawk says:
It's Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and that will be out in September for
PC, Playstation, Dreamcast, N64, and Gameboy. And I have a book coming
out the end of next month "Occupation: Skateboarder."
Digital Dish Diva says:
Bets of luck with both of those projects, Tony and thanks for
stopping by.
Tony Hawk says:
Thanks to everyone that participated. Keep skating and don't give
up!
