Welcome to MSN Live! Tonight MSN Live and DietRiot.com present
a chat event with Supermodel and host of E!'s "Fashion
Emergency," Emme. Increase your self-esteem with some great
advice of one of the world's most beautiful women, Emme.
Emme says:
Hi everyone, I'm finally here. I just wanted to welcome you all
to the chat. I'd love to hear all your questions and share your
thoughts on some pretty cool issues tonight. Let's get started!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Emme, welcome to MSN Live! Thanks for being our guest tonight!
Let's talk about "Fashion Emergency." Was the show your
concept?
Emme says:
The show was not my concept. John Riber was the exec at E! and
he was looking for a host for "Fashion Emergency" a few
years ago. He had the sensibility of looking at fashion not so
seriously! *laughing* I made sure that I wouldn’t be a host that
put people down. It's a good fit. At least I hope you think so!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Nice pun, Emme! Have you thought about putting together a book
or video on the best of Fashion Emergency?
Emme says:
It would be great to revisit our fashion emergencies and see if
they've kept up with their makeovers. We should be making surprise
visits. It should be fun! I'm working on some ideas for a new
book, and I'll be talking about fulfilling dreams and how to go
about living through the ups and downs of life.
Digital Dish Diva says:
veronica says: When you see people who need fashion help, do
you want to just go make them over? I have a terrible time with
that. I look at someone and want to tell them they need a new
haircut, that whole Farrah thing is out.
Emme says:
Aw. Well, the Farrah thing is actually very in right now, but I
get what you mean. They've probably had it since Farrah was Farrah,
and that drives you crazy, I understand. However, I usually offer
my advice only when people want it, other wise I get slapped.
*laughing*
Digital Dish Diva says:
tess Asks: Emme, you're gorgeous. I'd like pointers on how to
improve my self-esteem. Sometimes I wake up feeling so. I'm
active, accomplished, I try to be a kind, giving caring person,
but I just have this thing, this feeling that I'm ugly.
Emme says:
tess, understand first that you're not alone. We all go through
these weird phases in life where there's not one specific reason
to feel that way, but we just do. I believe that self-esteem is
something we earn or gain in life through our effort. No one is
just born with incredible self-esteem, although it might seem that
way. That's not the way luck is thrown at us. I suggest you start
writing in a journal about your feelings and refuse to body-bash
yourself. Refuse to use yourself as a battering ram and use your
voice about the way you feel in the world around you-- as a tool
to build your self-esteem. Figure out if you're eating
correctly--enough whole grains, fresh veggies. Give yourself the
benefit of physical exercise and make sure that you're getting
enough sleep. All these can build on yourself and your
self-esteem.
Digital Dish Diva says:
duchess Asks: Hi Emme. I am doing a project for my Senior
English class. I have to answer one question and I would like your
help if you wouldn't mind. Is the life of a Supermodel really that
glamorous? I would like any information you have to offer. Thanks.
Emme says:
duchess, I have to admit that there are many times that my life
is extremely glamorous at other times very dull and at other
times, so glorifyingly fulfilling that there's not just one
answer. It's a little bit of this and that. try to keep
diversified as much as possible. I stay in touch with family and
friends, live a celebrity life and then a very basic
husband-and-wife life. *laughing* I'm having a lot of fun.
Digital Dish Diva says:
bailey says: I am a very successful web designer but I can't
sleep. I lay awake all night thinking about work or I dream about
work. Any tips on sleeping well? I need rest!
Emme says:
bailey, magnesium if you have no aversion to it. It is
wonderful help to get yourself sleeping. A nutritionist told me
that it would help with resting easy for me. No caffeine after
your first or second cup in the morning. Reduce your chocolate
intake. That might be hard. A little exercise each day gets your
body into a natural rhythm. Try to get to bed at the same time
every day. I have the same problem. Good luck.
Digital Dish Diva says:
lyoness Asks: How do I find clothes that are for full figure
size that don't look like my Mothers clothes?
Emme says:
lyoness, this is the first online announcement that you will be
able to purchase the Emme Collection in stores Fall 2000 in
department stores near you. If you can't find it, call them and
let them know. It should be in 200-300 stores around the country.
Price range $69 - $128. You have never tried anything on like
this! It'll make you scream up and down the streets! *laughing*
Please, give me your feedback and let me know what you think at my
website http://www.emmesupermodel.com
and I can give you a list of places to go to before then! All my
pants are flat-front, no pleats, fall from the hip to the floor
and you don't need to wear a long shirt because your behind looks
great. Size 10 to 24. My husband hates pants on me normally, but
these pants rock, if you don't mind me saying so! Tweed, 2-way
stretch, with cuffs, without cuffs, skirts of suede cloth,
embroidered, material of my own-- so you won't have panty lines.
Emme says:
It's a wardrobe system so that if you find a pant you love, you
can go to the collection and find it again. They won't discontinue
it. It’s colorful for ages 25 to 40. It’s all in the attitude.
It has nothing to do with age, just youthful attitude. Women who
are 18 or hip 60 year old women. And everything has shape to it.
My line creates shape for you, enhances your shape, and lets you
walk with confidence. I've been working on this for years,
listening to you, listening in dressing rooms.
Digital Dish Diva says:
So, major department stores this fall?
Emme says:
Saks, Nordstrom, the whole gamut of department stores. All the
skirts and pants will come in tall, average, and petite. We had a
buyer today cry in the showroom. She loved it so. It's better than
my expectations. I'm blown away.
Digital Dish Diva says:
TipiTinas Asks: Emme what does your daily diet consist of? You
look great!
Emme says:
I eat basically everything, and at times have to pull myself
back from sweets and exercise, but I do not like to go on diets or
restrict myself. Because I live a hectic lifestyle, as a lot of
you guys do, I have to remind myself to eat more green veggies,
veggies in general, fruits, and whole grains, instead of the quick
carbo. Thanks for the compliment, but it's being mindful. If you
find that you get to a weight that's more than you like,
physically, then it's time to cut back instead of listening to
some diet. You know the best. Don't deny yourself, that's when you
go overboard. Learn to live with the food you like. If you eat
cookies every day, instead of taking them away, add veggies, fruit
and you'll see you'll naturally eat fewer cookies. There's a
balance you have to teach yourself. Denial will make you unhappy.
Figure out what are empty calories. Forget about "good"
and "bad." A good book to read is "Intuitive
Eating." It's available at the library or B&N Online.
Every woman with an eating issue should read it. Buy one for a
friend.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Ney Asks: What is the biggest thrill you've had since your
modeling career took off?
Emme says:
I've been very, very fortunate to do really incredible things.
I travel around the world a couple of times. I get to have my
husband, who's my manager, instead of traveling alone, travels
with me, so I'm not mourning every time I leave. So we share the
joy of going places, meeting people, and seeing incredible things
and going to places I could never ever dream of together. To come
out with this clothing line is one of the most incredible dreams
I've had in 10 years of modeling and going through the
frustrations that all of us women go through. This is an
incredible dream come true. And it's wonderful to have a partner
like Kellwood that stands behind me.
Digital Dish Diva says:
gretschen Asks: Hi Emme, curious as to how someone could get on
"Fashion Emergency." Thanks.
Emme says:
gretschen, you need to go on Eonline.com and the "Fashion
Emergency" site and be VERY creative in your plea. It's
difficult, but we're really trying to do something that touches
the viewer, entertains the viewer, and brings a sense of community
that we can all relate to. So, you have to think of an
entertaining twist. We love charities, and we love people getting
over major obstacles in life, as we all have them. Good luck!
Digital Dish Diva says:
sweetface says: Are pashminas still in?
Emme says:
sweetface, pashmina will be in until the dogs come home. I
can't even express this beyond words. Pashmina is the best gift
from the fashion industry to lowly us. It will keep you warm on a
slightly chilly evening. It’s a great scarf for your neck, a
great wrap for formal, or wrap for in bed on Sunday. It’s great
for new moms in a hospital for something familiar and warm.
Digital Dish Diva says:
I use mine when I travel. It's great on cool airplanes.
Emme says:
It's a great gift for a good girlfriend who needs a pick-me-up.
It's expensive, but it'll be useful forever. I just can't say
enough!
Digital Dish Diva says:
paula says: I am 15 and I am a size 12. I feel so huge among my
friends. I am popular but the guys tease me. My mom thought you
might be able to help me. Can you?
Emme says:
Paula, I can relate to you 100%. The boys just don't know what
they have, so we'll get to them later. #1, check out my book
"True Beauty" at the library. I went through like what
you went through. You're not alone. If anybody speaks to you in a
way that's not acceptable, as a 15 year old, you need to start
using your voice. Calmly but confidently, say to whomever is
speaking to you that they're hurting your feelings. If this
continues and repeats, let the bully know that they must be
feeling awfully badly inside themselves to put another person
down, and that you feel badly for them. If someone puts someone
else down, they must be feeling SO low. It doesn't make the hurt
any less, but it has nothing to do with you. I suggest you start a
journal and write down EVERYTHING. Be honest about your feelings.
It's your property. Tell your feelings in it. Figure out if you
can have a discussion, honest and open, with your girlfriends
about how they feel with the boys saying things. They may have
similar feelings. More than likely, they do! Good luck. Don't keep
it inside, and know that you are a true beauty.
Digital Dish Diva says:
sha Asks: Do you have to slim down for certain shoots or gain
or do they prefer you to stay the same weight always?
Emme says:
sha, the benefits of being a full-figured model is that we all
are naturally around 12, 14, or 16, and unlike the other models
it's pretty easy to stay within our natural weight. Especially
because we're pretty tall 5'11, 5'10. We have to keep in
proportion, work out, eat correctly, not starve, take care of
ourselves and learn the balance. If a client told me to lose, I'd
tell them to take a hike!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Jewel says: Who was a role model for you when you were trying
to make you niche in life?
Emme says:
Jewel, I wanted to be a sportscaster at the time I was younger,
I loved Martina Navritolova, Billy Jean King, Nancy Leiberman. I
got an athletic scholarship to college at the beginning of women
getting the rights that men were getting, the early 1980s we won
Title IX , which gave me so much encouragement. A woman named Gail
on ESPN was really good, and I loved Johnny Carson. I thought I'd
love to meet new and interesting people and be on TV each night
instead of being a sportscaster. So, I took as many communication
and speech classes, and interned at the local CBS affiliate (for
no money), and learned it was something I loved. I got the bug.
Barbara Walters, Jane Pauley, so many women that I really looked
up to and studied their interviewing techniques. You have to pay
your dues by being paid nothing! But living through passion with
what you want to do. Be persistent. When you get a NO, find a way
to get a YES.
Emme says:
I worked several jobs. It's building blocks. It was worth it to
me. There are so many everyday mentors that helped me with
encouragement or a hug. That just opened doors for me, or a good
meal and an evening of encouragement. With every part of yourself,
look for mentors in your life--a woman or man you see doing what
you want to do in 10 years and ask them if they would mentor you.
Ask if you could work for free at whatever you want to do-- intern
as a garbage collector if that's what you want to do-- whet your
appetite and find out if you hate it or like it. Then ask them if
they know people who have entry level jobs. Take the steps towards
your dreams. I hope you all have hundreds of dreams in your life,
because it's possible!
Digital Dish Diva says:
danny1987 says: Do you have a last name?
Emme says:
danny, *laughing* Aaronson. You wouldn't know, would ya?
Digital Dish Diva says:
Marilyn Asks: As a full figured woman, what has been your
greatest challenge? Are there situations that make you
uncomfortable or wish you were a different size?
Emme says:
Marilyn, I guess that my activism has gotten stronger through
the years through all those uncomfortable times. So, now it's a
challenge to listen, educate when the challenge is before me,
forgive ignorance and not take it all too seriously at the end of
the day. I make it an important issue in my life and all that I
do.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Rainebird Asks: Emme, I'm 34 and feeling old. I hate the fact
that age is taking a toll on my body. Time has drawn with its
pencil fine lines on my face. What can I do to hinder this
process? What products do you feel would be most beneficial?
Emme says:
Rainebird, the best product is your attitude, so let's rev it
up with re-writing your mental dialogue of what old is. Why not
make old just a word, and take age out of it. Are you feeling
lethargic? If your physical is changing your feelings, then it's
time to get out dancing, disco dancing. "Disco Inferno"
helps everybody! If you want to take a shot at another part of
your personality that you've never done before-- change your hair
color, style, wear leather. Mix up the pot! I have a newsflash for
you. You're young and vibrant, so don't let age keep you from
fulfilling your dreams.
Digital Dish Diva says:
zephyr Asks: Hi Emme! What is the worst fashion no-no you've
ever done?
Emme says:
zephyr, I've done so many. *laughing* Which one? Funny to try
to figure it out. A girlfriend of mine just sent me blackmail
pictures. When I was a page at NBC, I wore, I can't believe I'm
saying this-- pink pleated, like polyester linen-lined pants with
a perm that made very straight close to my face with clips in and
a poof in the back. I hadn't tweezed my eyebrows, so I had these
great bushy eyebrows. I almost had a hernia I was laughing so
hard! So, I hadn't just one, I had a lot going on. Everyone has
their fashion do's and don't days. I have a better one! I'm
walking down the street in front of The Plaza Hotel in winter,
wearing thick opaque stockings, a python skirt a little above my
knee, and my phone is at the top of my skirt hooked on, and a big
coat and boots up to my knees. My hair is done, my makeup is done,
and I'm walking with confidence. Getting men looking, winking here
and there and I'm thinking, this is a good day!
Emme says:
I get to my husband's appointment, and the receptionist says,
"What's wrong? Your skirt is up to your waist!!" It had
rolled all the way up to my hips!! *laughing* All the men were
thinking I don't know what! I wanted to crawl under a stone, but
it was the most hilarious thing! I was walking with just my
pantyhose! *laughing*
Digital Dish Diva says:
Cares Asks: Emme, I have always wanted to be a plus size model.
Did it take you a long time to pursue your career ?
Emme says:
Cares, back in the early 90s, late 80s, the industry was just a
budding rose opening up. So, when I first started they were
looking for women who were my demo. It was easy for me to walk
into it. But I held down 3 jobs my first few years. It's not
glamorous. You have to have a business mind. If you don't take
rejection lightly, this is not the career for you. Turn around and
do something you're passionate about. We don't need low
self-esteem models. I did as much as I could, with thank-you
notes, visiting people, showing them my book. My business grew.
Emme says:
Times have changed now, there's a market and "Mode"
Magazine is very good. Other mags are using age, size and other
diversities. Be wary of scams. You should not have to pay money up
front or go to a modeling school. Have your parents involved in
your decisions, have friends help you check it out so that you
don't get taken over. There are hundreds of thousands of women who
dream of becoming a model, but only 2 or 3 really make it. Those
are the realities. Not to be a downer, but that's the truth. Go to
your local department stores, and they'll be honored to have you
be part of their fashion shows. And if someone sees you or starts
using you for print, that's good. But don't put all your eggs in
one basket. Good luck, and enjoy the journey! You're much, much
more than just a pretty face. There are so many girls that get
taken because they just want to be told their beautiful.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Woodsprite Asks: Are there any specific fashion no-nos for big
girls?
Emme says:
Woodsprite, there are fashion do's and don'ts for all women,
specifically for large women. Do not wear tight underwear with
tight pants, you won't have a nice elongated silhouette. Find
foundations-- lycra smoothies, like biker short length, in Target,
Walmart, Kmart, department stores-- light and smooth body slimmers
will give you that look. Find the right seamless bra so you don't
have lace showing through a body-conscious dress. I don't like
thongs, unless they're made large and comfy. It's nice to have a
lycra slip, spaghetti strap to above the knee for a smooth look.
It doesn't have to have a lot of lycra 1% or 2%. If you have that
smooth look, it's nice. Women shouldn't feel uncomfortable with
their bodies. If you do layering, do it with light and sheer
fabrics. Let layering be graceful and not with thick, dense, matte
materials. Figure out your body type-- hourglass, round, pear--
and what clothes work well with you. Take time to try things out.
Try clothes on. When my clothes come out this fall, try them on.
Try new lines on. Tell your department stores to change the
lighting so that it's a pleasurable experience. If you can't find
things that work for you, let them know. Use your voice. The
lighting is usually horrible and the rooms not big enough. They're
nuts for not putting good lighting in!
Digital Dish Diva says:
TerryWC Asks: The members of the Living Large board on MSN were
excited to see you on the cover of Mode again. And I know they'll
be happy to hear about your new clothing line. Where can we find
out about it?
Emme says:
TerryWC, you can find out more about it on http://www.emmesupermodel.com
That's a good starting
place. We answer email, and there's a fashion survey to ask what
you like and dislike and what your price range is. All the
questions you can think of. Everyone that writes in stays on our
mailing list and we send out a "What's Happening" to
keep aware of whatever's going on with Emme. Announcements,
nothing overbearing, though. I promise. It makes you a part of the
community. And check out http://www.alight.com
They're a wonderful resource for full-figured dressing, mass
market to designer. A designer for someone going to a really
special occasion-- Richard Metzger-- he's at alight.com-- amazing
special occasion dressing. There might be something in the future
with me on this, but for other lines of clothes, they're great.
Abbie Lynn is great, fun sundresses, etc. She used to be an MTV VJ.
Modestyle.com is wonderful. Alight has great resources.
Digital Dish Diva says:
"pink angel" Asks: I have a daughter that is going to
be a beautiful full figured woman. How can I make her appreciate
her body?
Emme says:
pink angel, just continue being the wonderful mom you are.
Celebrate her intelligence, zest for life, interests, and love her
like you do and she'll be the wonderful woman you describe her to
be. The less you focus on the physical for the only attribute for
accreditation, the better. It's just part of the package. Her
brain, kindness, and loving is what's really beautiful-- that's
what makes a good person, and one that we need.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Emme, this has been such a great hour. Thank you for spending
this evening with us. You are beautiful inside and out. Best of
luck with your new clothing line!
Emme says:
It's been such a pleasure to share and continue to blab about
things that are so near to our hearts. Thanks for sharing with me
and enlightening me. May each and every one of you live life with
peace and lots of passion. Until next time, I'll talk to you soon!
Good night!
