Digital Dish Diva says:
Welcome to MSN Live! This afternoon MSN Live and DietRiot.com
present a chat with fitness expert, Denise Austin. You can catch
Denise early each morning for her fitness show on LIFETIME TV.
Denise Austin says:
Happy Spring! It's time to get our bodies in shape for the
summertime and shed some of those extra winter pounds!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Denise, welcome to MSN Live. It's great to have you back!
Denise Austin says:
I've got a brand-new way to lose those last ten pounds. In
two weeks my book comes out "Lose Those Last ten Pounds: A
Foolproof Plan."
Digital Dish Diva says:
Can you tell us a little about your new book?
Denise Austin says:
The book is a twenty-eight day plan on losing ten pounds.
What to eat, how to exercise, and ways to boost your metabolism
two to three times a day along with a program with Pilates-style,
strength, yoga, and weight-training. I'm a big believer in
moving through the day-- fidgeting can burn 500 calories in a
day. I teach you twenty different ways to fidget and burn those
extra calories in the day without ever getting on sweats, a
leotard or aerobic shoes!
Digital Dish Diva says:
karyn/Kris says: First of all, we do your abs and buns
ten-minute video every morning. It has been a real help to my
roommate who has a herniated disc and pinched sciatic nerve, but
we have one question: How do we get rid of inner thigh/lower
abs?
Denise Austin says:
karyn/Kris, one of the best exercises to do for that area is
a Pelvic Tilt, get on the floor, feet flat, bend your knees and
press them together, then lift your hips off the floor-- you
work your tummy. It's a great exercise.
Digital Dish Diva says:
starburst says: How do you help your friends lose weight?
Denise Austin says:
starburst, I walk with them. I try to encourage them to
exercise with me. A lot of my friends, every Sunday I call my
girlfriends for a walk, some jog, so I call them, and I line up
my whole four days of aerobic training for the week-- I walk
with my girlfriends for thirty minutes and then we come back and
do some stretching.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Brandy says: Denise, you have been an incredible inspiration
to me-love the kickboxing video!
Denise Austin says:
Brandy, I'm filming a new exercise video next month for
release in August. It will be interval training with kickboxing,
yoga, a little of everything.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Auddie says: I cannot avoid food! That's my biggest problem.
How do you do it Denise?
Denise Austin says:
Auddie, I love food, too. But I make sure throughout the day
I eat little meals to keep my metabolism steady so I don't binge
as often that way. I put my entire eating plan in my new book,
with over fifty great recipes, and it comes out in two weeks.
Digital Dish Diva says:
DINA says: Hi Denise. What is the best way to lose 50+ lbs?
Denise Austin says:
Dina, start month by month. The book would be good for you--
ten or ten0 pounds, you have to start. I teach you how to lose
ten pounds a month, so just stay on it for five months. It's
safe and approved by many doctors and top dieticians and
nutritionists.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Sue says: I read one set of "lifts", gives 98% of
the strength as three sets, is that true?
Denise Austin says:
Sue, there is some truth to it, although I like to do weight
training and vary it. Once a week I'll do one set of eight to
ten reps of a series of twenty exercises then, two days later,
I'll do some of the major muscle groups and do two to three
sets. It's a great variety. I like to do the one set because
it's quick and efficient.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Willow says: Is there any merit to over training certain
overdeveloped muscles in order to reduce their mass? I have huge
and unsightly calves and would like to reduce their muscularity!
Denise Austin says:
Willow, one of the best things to do is stretch and elongate
the muscle. So stretch your calf muscle by doing a lunge and
stretch forward to stretch the back leg's calf.
Digital Dish Diva says:
lulubelle says: Once you stop the plan in your new book, what
is your suggestion for keeping the weight from returning?
Denise Austin says:
lulubelle, keep it up! My goal is for everyone to follow my
plan as your life plan. Always continue to exercise through the
rest of your life. Fitness isn't stored, only fat is. I try to
teach easy ways to fit it into your day. Move more each day, and
you can blast away some of those calories. If you do my plan of
thirty minutes a day for five days a week, and you'll keep it
off.
Digital Dish Diva says:
pdaily says: Denise, I have had two c-sections and have a scar
from my belly button down. Is there anyway that I can ever get my
abs flat or at least not looking like two separate rolls of dough
next to each other. I really need help.
Denise Austin says:
pdaily, hopefully you were cut horizontally, and you can get
better because your muscles were pulled and not cut. So, they can
be made to go flat again with extra effort. There's good hope you
can with five minutes a day, tone that area by doing reverse
sit-ups. Pull the stomach in, is throughout the day-- suck it in.
Re-train the tummy muscles to tuck in. The more you practice just
standing in line at the grocery-- everywhere-- pulling in your
abs, helps re-train your overstretched muscles. There is hope, you
can do it. Try my "Hips & Abs" video-- I target the
lower tummy.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Brandy says: What is the name of your new video that due for
release?
Denise Austin says:
Brandy, we haven't titled it yet, but the working one is
"Blast the Fat Off" or "Blast the Last ten Pounds
Cardio Workout".
Digital Dish Diva says:
Angel says: Is there anyway to get rid of stretch marks?
Denise Austin says:
Angel, stretch marks are hereditary first, and second of all,
the goal is not to gain and lose weight-- that stretches the skin.
So, once you lose the weight, keep it down and that will help them
fade away quicker.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Laurie says: What are the best exercises during and right after
pregnancy?
Denise Austin says:
Laurie, first, always check with your doctor and after you get
approval to exercise (I continued through both of my pregnancies--
to the day I had each baby, and even did step aerobics the morning
my first daughter was born.) Take the bounce out. Make things more
low impact. You can still do light weights. Basically you can do
the same routine, as long as you exercised the same way three
months prior to getting pregnant. Try my new pregnancy book or
video. I was eight months pregnant when I taped it. The book
explains what to eat at each trimester and how to bounce back
after the baby arrives.
Digital Dish Diva says:
JIMMY Z says: What do you recommend during the day to stop
hunger pains between meals?
Denise Austin says:
JimmyZ, try to eat a protein with a carbohydrate, like when
you're eating a salad, also add chicken or fish with it to keep
your energy level up. A salad alone without protein will make you
weak quickly. I suggest you drink lots of water, too. Eat a little
something every two hours-- something healthy like yogurt or fruit
to keep your metabolism up so it never slows down.
Digital Dish Diva says:
India says: Denise, I have large thighs and would like to know
the best way to slim them without adding additional bulk. I'm a
short person, so I'm looking for a lengthening effect.
Denise Austin says:
India, one of the best is walking. Fast, fast, as briskly as
you can, for thirty minutes. You can do that most every day. Also,
stretching your legs is very, very helpful in lengthening-- Quad
Stretch and a Hamstring Stretch every day.
Digital Dish Diva says:
KW says: Denise, I have heard a lot about the Atkins diet
recently. How safe is it?
Denise Austin says:
KW, to be honest, I believe in eating a well-balanced meal and
I believe good carbs like fruits and veggies are important for a
balanced diet.
Digital Dish Diva says:
lowpar says: How much walking is necessary to lose weight as
opposed to going to a gym also does the pace matter?
Denise Austin says:
lowpar, trying to walk at least five days a week is the best
for losing. Thirty minutes is a good amount of time to lose fat--
but you have to go at a pace where you're really making yourself
move-- BRISK. If you can do about one mile in fifteen minutes,
you're burning fat.
Digital Dish Diva says:
babyblue555 says: I’m having a party for my co-workers and I
don't know what to serve them. Any ideas?
Denise Austin says:
babyblue, breakfast, lunch or dinner? For lunch, I have a great
recipe in my book for Great Chicken Salad-- no mayo, green spinach
for lots of energy (Popeye was right), and marinated and grilled
and cubed chicken, and lots of veggies like tomatoes. Pita bread
with Parmesan cheese, broiled for a bit. Have some Florida
grapefruit juice with lots of ice and garnished with strawberries.
Digital Dish Diva says:
ms says: Denise you are my hero. You got me thin once, I lost
you when I moved and gained again. I just recently
"rediscovered" you on Lifetime. When I walk, my shins
ache. How can I prevent that? Stay on the air.
Denise Austin says:
ms, shin splints can happen by 1) bad shoes, a lot of people
don't wear good enough arch support, so make sure you have good
arch support. You can try my new shoes at QVC-- they're a great
walking shoe.
Digital Dish Diva says:
LK says: Denise what motivates you to workout? I sometimes have
a hard time getting the motivation to workout. What do you
suggest?
Denise Austin says:
LK, I work out because I know how much better I feel after. I
get rid of tension, anxiety, and feel better about myself. It's
one of the best ways to fight the aging process. And I don't work
out that much-- thirty minutes, but I do it most days. So it
doesn't take that much out of your day. Try on a bathing suit--
that'll motivate you!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Sentimentalist says: I'm a retro chick who'd like to keep her
hourglass figure (to look right in 1950s/60s clothes) but still
loose weight. What can you suggest? The old books suggest dancing,
is this still thought to be effective?
Denise Austin says:
Sentimentalist, dancing is VERY effective and one of the best
ways to burn calories. But you need to couple it with toning
exercises. I think the combination of three days a week of
fat-burning aerobics and two days for toning and stretching to
zero in on problem spots
Digital Dish Diva says:
Rachael says: Denise, I'm getting married in June and my dress
is sleeveless. I would like to know what I can do to get rid of
the flabby part of my upper arms.
Denise Austin says:
Rachael, one of the best exercises are Triceps Dips. With a
chair, sitting, placing your hands on the edge of the chair by
your hips, and then scoot your rear off the chair, bend your
elbows and then straighten. It firms and tones the back of your
arms. It's a great exercise.
Digital Dish Diva says:
marisa two001 says: I am 17 years old and weigh one hundred and
three and I am unhealthy I try to gain weight but everyone thinks
I am throwing up my food and I feel stupid around my mom because
she thinks I am.
Denise Austin says:
Marisa, remember that eating right is for good health, too, and
you must eat at least three times in a day. I believe in
breakfast, lunch and dinner. Make sure you're getting some form of
exercise. It's a great stress-reliever.
Digital Dish Diva says:
murphy says: What are some healthy after school snacks and
should I keep things low fat for my two kids ages five and eight?
Denise Austin says:
murphy, I have kids about the same age, and when they come home
I give them yogurt, peanut butter on whole-wheat crackers, cereal
mix with nuts in it (nuts are healthy), almonds, or fat-free
popcorn.
Digital Dish Diva says:
oldman says: Denise, I have been having a problem with fatigue
late in the afternoon. I am very active, especially at night and I
am losing energy. What do you suggest?
Denise Austin says:
oldman, a lot of times losing energy in the late afternoon,
three pm doldrums, is due to stale breathing. Take deep breaths to
make oxygen flow to your brain-- inhale through the nose and
exhale out the nose, every hour on the hour remember and take
three deep breaths. That gets the energy moving. Also, get up out
of your chair, it improves circulation. Sitting is one of the
worst things you can do for your circulation.
Digital Dish Diva says:
DietChick says: What is the best tape of yours that is for a
true beginner? I have one hundred and sixty pounds to lose.
Denise Austin says:
DietChick, my best beginner is called "Extra Light
Aerobics for Beginners." It is thirty minutes, but I take you
through low impact aerobics with fun dance moves you'll really
enjoy. My 74-year-old mother does it. So can you. You'll love it,
it's fun music, too.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Jacquels says: What can I do that will help firm my buttocks?
It appears that I have something to lift back there but I look
flat and kind of wide. Leg lifts don't seem to be helping.
Denise Austin says:
Jacquels, one thing I tell everyone is to SQUEEZE your tushie
for five seconds and release everywhere. Isometrics that firm
those buttocks. Do it any time anywhere. If you don't squeeze it,
no one else will. *grin*
Digital Dish Diva says:
KW says: I went through a period of depression about four
months ago and have about fifteen extra pounds of fat to show for
it. Is there any fast safe effective method for losing it? I found
that my blood sugar is low also. And I get shaky at times.
Denise Austin says:
KW, my best suggestion is "Lose the Last Ten Pounds."
You never starve yourself.
Digital Dish Diva says:
melissa says: Do you recommend lifting weights to lose weight?
Do I still need to do aerobics? I hate aerobics.
Denise Austin says:
Melissa, yes, you can lose weight by lifting weights. Your
muscles are like boosting your metabolism, so your goal is to have
more muscle tone in your body to keep the metabolism revved up.
One of the best ways to lose weight and shape up-- and one of the
best ways to fight gravity-- if your muscles are toned and firmed,
nothing will droop or sag. I have a workout video, "Totally
Firm," a workout with weights, on my website if you'd like to
try it.
Digital Dish Diva says:
hailey says: What are your thoughts on yoga? Do you have a yoga
video?
Denise Austin says:
hailey, yes, I love yoga and I have a video filmed from the
mountains of Utah. The nice part of Yoga is you stretch and tone
in the same motion. I've been doing it for nine years. I love it
and it's a great stress reliever. I also perform them on
Lifetime's Denise Austin Fit & Light at 7a ET. An hour of yoga
and body style.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Sleek N Chic says: I have an extreme amount of lower back pain,
and my legs begin to ache while working as a floral designer.
Someone recommended yoga to increase my flexibility. Will it
really help me, and if not, what do you suggest?
Denise Austin says:
Sleek n Chic, yoga will help you. Any form of exercise will
help you keep the muscles strong in your legs. Stretching when you
come home from work is very important. Get down on the floor and
do five minutes of stretches-- it will help tremendously to
relieve tension from your lower back. Also, strong abs is very
important to protect your back, so do some ab exercises on a
regular basis. In the new book, I have a whole section on the best
ab exercises and the safest ways to do them with a bad back.
Digital Dish Diva says:
covergirl says: I enjoy walking but I am so bored. Do you make
a walking music tape or can you recommend one?
Denise Austin says:
covergirl, yes, I do have a walking tape that has a brisk and a
beginner walk on it. I also like to tape my own songs from my
favorite CDs and go for a thirty-minute walk with a different
variety of songs. Walk with a friend and gab. The time goes by
much quicker!
Digital Dish Diva says:
